Similarities between these tow men include the desire to live in the wild and find happiness outside of the material world. They are both striving to break away from the norm and experience life in the moment.
Differences between them include Thoreau's desire to build a home and live with knowledge of the forest while McCandless is simply tramping his way into the wilderness and learning along the way.
